Description
Summary:Between 1668 and 1669 Cosimo de' Medici, the 26-yearold heir to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, visited Spain as part of an educational tour of the main courts and cities of Western Europe to learn their customs, culture, art and politics. He acquired several paintings, drawings, glass and silverware, perfumed leather and gloves, exotic American objects and weapons during the trip, as examples of the cultural and artistic development of the country. All of them were the result of the prince s interests and sensibilities and are connected with his still quite unknown biography from these years. They also confirm his refined, exotic tastes and his early role in the acquisition of pieces for the Medici collections. The prince brought a number of representative cultural and artistic works from Spain to Florence, but unfortunately did not acquire any relevant Spanish paintings, the most significant lacuna today in the Uffizi collection.
