Summary: | The switched reluctance machine has significant advantages in terms of robustness control simplicity and wide speed range which are appropriate for variable speed generation of electrical energy. Despite these characteristics the switched reluctance machine as a variable speed generator has been rather under-researched with the exception of some publications related to aerospace applications. Little research concerning the performance and control system of the switched reluctance machine for wind energy conversion systems has been reported This paper discusses the excellent characteristic of the switched reluctance machine for wind energy applications Experimental results obtained from a 7.5kW prototype such as efficiency torque ripple current ripple and converter topology are discussed. Two control strategies for operation of a switched reluctance generator in variable speed wind energy conversion systems are implemented in a 7.5kW transputer controlled rig. Experimental results of these control strategies are also presented. |
