Description
Summary:The central question of this article is whether the built environment, urban versus suburban, has any influence on the frequency of contacts with neighbours. The results are presented of a survey about households, which moved from a central city to a new town in The Netherlands. It showed a significant increase of the frequency of contacts with neighbours. With the help of four models we attempted to explain this change. In a multivariate analysis it is shown, that this increase of contacts with neighbours can be attributed to male sex, having a job, having young children, a socially more homogeneous neighbourhood and the move from apartment dwelling to a terraced house. When specifying for some social categories, it is concluded, that men without young children are more subject to changes of the built environment than women with young children.
