Description
Summary:This paper is concerned with three main evaluations of the scientific credentials of psychoanalytic theory respectively due to Logical Empiricism, to Popper and to A. Grünbaum. In the case of Logical Empiricism a distinction is drawn between the opinions of the founders (Neurath, Carnap, Reichenbach etc.) and the ideas of authors deeply influenced by the movement, such as Nagel, Salmon, Pap etc. It is emphasized that those evaluations, often really interesting, are not unvaryingly unfavourable. As to popperian philosophy of science it is shown that here, quite differently from the case of Logical Empiricism, psychoanalysis plays a «constitutive» rôle, for in Popper's opinion freudian theory is a «paradigm» of unscience. Finally, the paper starts from Grünbaum's critique to Popper and Freud in order to show that the evaluation of the scientific credentials of a theory is not a purely epistemological matter but essentially depends on the scientific context the theory is inserted in.
