Summary: | Microspectrophotometric analysis of methyl green stained hepatocyte nuclei reveal increased basophilia in cells of senescent rats. Comparison with Feulgen stained hepatocytes eliminates changes in DNA content as an explanation of these findings and offers additional support for the hypothesis that this reflects an increased metabolic state. It is suggested that this functional alteration is compensatory for the loss of cells which occurs with advancing age. |
