Summary:Grain and flour beetles Tenebrionidae, Tribolium spp. secrete tetritoxin, a contaminant of insect-infested foods. The synthesis of ethyl-p-benzoquinone, the principal constituent of the toxin, is described. Polarographic and vapor pressure data of the synthetic material as well as its subcutaneous and oral toxicities in mice are reported. The corresponding properties of the natural toxin isolated from Tribolium confusum Duv. and T. castaneum (Hbst.) have been found to be very similar.
