Description
Summary:We evaluated stream drift of newly hatched sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus) ammocoetes over a 2-year period on the mid-to-upper Delaware River. Ammocoetes were collected using four gear types in five different habitats. Turbidity, current velocity, river depth, sample depth, temperature, and dissolved oxygen were simultaneously recorded in each habitat. Relations among ammocoete density, habitats, and physical variables were determined by regression and analysis of variance. These analyses showed no differences in ammocoete density among five different habitats sampled: riffles, riffle pools, riffle eddies, pools, and channels. This wide range of habitat use indicates that early larval ammocoetes merely drift and do not use particular habitats between up-river spawning sites and down-river burrowing sites.
