Description
Summary:This article is about Frederick the Great's collecting of ancient gemstones, though the parameters of his collecting may be ambiguous. The author reviews the principal stages of the studies on Frederician glyptic art and extends the research to include the development of a taste for ancient objects, especially gemstones from the 11th and the 12th centuries, and also relies on literary sources. In connection with this investigation, the author also re-examines the supposed presence of the Tazza Farnese in Frederick the Great's collection.
