Summary: | Wood burning is a major source of energy for cooking and indoor heating in many developing nations. Wood fires generate a number of combustion products which are known or suspected carcinogenic agents. It is suggested that the high incidence of cancers of the upper respiratory and digestive systems in some of the countries of the Pacific Basin and Southeast Asia may be related to chronic exposures to the smoke and other emissions from indoor fires. |
