Description
Summary:Reading Un amour de Swann in the wake of Malcolm Bowie's study of « slips » in Proust and Freud, this essay analyzes fetishism – pathological displacement or slippage – as narrative practice. Powered by both recognition and disavowal, the fetish as trope allows us to establish new links, new coherence, among disparate aspects of the narrative – from Swarnn's own aesthetic practices to disordered behaviors to the curious dream sequence that closes the text. As suggested by the ambiguity of the italicized name in the title – a name in which both character and text converge –, Proust's character functions as a marker of fetishism as behavior, trope and narrative practice in Un amour de Swann.
