Summary: | Sewage sludge can be a useful fertilizer for the agriculture. It is a potential nutrient source, grades up the soil structure and the water and heat management of the soil. However the utilization of sewage sludge in plant production is limited by the sanitary regulations and the heavy metal content.
The directives of the EU determine that the biologically treatable wastes – like the sewage sludge - should be used for biogas production, or composting primarily.
During the research we installed four different compost recipes with digested sewage sludge, saw dust, wood chips, straw and grass clipping. The aim of the project was to determine the conditions of composting for agricultural utilization, while decreasing the hazardous effects of sewage sludge and produce a stable, final product, which can be used as a fertilizer. |
