Description
Summary:The main objects of the series of experiments described in the present paper were two-fold: (a) to make precision measurements, over a moderate temperature-range, of the velocity of sound-waves in gases contained in resonating tubes; (b) to investigate the applicability of the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff expression for the relation between the “tree-space” velocity and the “tube” velocity in a gas. As regards (b) different observers in the past have reached diverse conclusions as to the dependence of tube-velocity on the frequency, on the roughness of the wall surface, and on the nature of the material of the tube.
