Summary: | The anatomy, function, pathology or clinical significance of Wrisberg ligament is not well known and little has been reported. The authors identified some unique characteristics of Wrisberg ligament through authroscopic posterior trans-septal approach treatment of discoid meniscal lesions, and reviewed MRI of the patients to analyse the atypical characteristics. Seventy nine patients with meniscal lesions confirmed by arthroscopy since Mar. 1997 through Sep. 1997 and with MRI`s taken by the same appratus and technique were reviewed. Thirty eight discoid and 41 non-discoid menisci were included. The presence or absence of the Wrisberg ligament, and the distribution of attachment site to the femoral condyle were analysed by dividing the medial femoral condyle in 4 quarters of equal height. Then the height of the femoral attachment point of the PCL and Wrisberg ligament were quantified and statistically analysed between discoid and non-discoid groups. PCL`s were mostly (94% and 92%) attached to region Ⅱ (quarter below middle) in both groups. Wrisberg ligament was identified in 84% of discoid menisci and 63% of non-discoid menisci. In discoid group, 81% of the Wrisberg ligament were attached to region Ⅲ (quarter above middle). In non-discoid group, only 27% attached to region Ⅲ, and 73% attached to region Ⅱ.
