Description
Summary:Jay Cudd, the owner of Ebeniste Restoration and Woodworks has been working in furniture repair and restoration for about 25 years. He began by apprenticing with a woodworker in Baton Rouge and then opened his own shop. While he does some furniture building, he specializes in the restoration of antiques, particularly the complicated process of French water gilding. In this interview, he describes how he learned to build furniture through apprenticing and self-study, and also how he also spent a lot of time in the LSU library reading books on furniture making and applying the techniques that he read about. He describes the tools he uses, many of which he fabricates, and the pieces of furniture he has built. He gives a detailed description of the process of French water gilding--a complicated process of shellacking a piece of furniture--and the skills needed for this exacting restoration process.
