Summary: | Ernest Afful, whose parents own and operate Accra African Market in Columbus, was born in Ghana and grew up in the US. He talks about how and why his parents started the store, and what he enjoys about working there. He also discusses his family's immigration history; growing up African in the US; and his work environment. He explains that most of the store's customers are West African and Christian, but their clientele also includes numerous east Africans, many of whom are Muslim. He discusses the high economic and educational level of the shop's patrons, many of whom are Ohio State University students and professionals. He finishes by talking about how selling food is a way of keeping African identity and relieving homesickness. |
