Summary: | Mechanical stresses in a structure that are caused by an increase or decrease in the temperature of the structure. The reference to “stress” is natural since high stresses can cause failure; however, it is best to refer to strains when defining the effect of thermal loading. The strain (ε) at a point in a body can be caused firstly by stress (σ), and in its simplest form is related by the material's stiffness (E). Secondly, it can be caused simply by a change in temperature (T), whence it is related by a coefficient of expansion (α). The total strain is therefore written as Eq. (1). |
