Summary: | Content Partner: Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research. The preferred area for wapiti contains one of the very few areas in New Zealand where calcareous tertiary rocks occur above timberline. These calcareous deposits have a diversity of plants, including 28 shrubs and herbs that are almost confined to calcareous rock. Myosotis concinna is found here only, together with 5 other species that are found nowhere else in northwest Nelson. The vegetation is continuing to recover from the high red deer numbers of the recent past. To increase the numbers of wapiti above the present red deer numbers would be completely incompatible with the conservation value of the area. (auth) |
