Summary: | A mass spectrometric study of the abundances of the isotopes of germanium has been made using germanium tetrachloride and tetrafluoride prepared from germanium compounds of different geological and geographical origins. Germanium has five isotopes: Ge
70
, Ge
72
, Ge
73
, Ge
74
, and Ge
76
. Variations in the natural abundance ratios were found, to the extent of 0.7% for the
ratio. Calculations of the chemical atomic weight of germanium from the isotope abundance of this and of other recent mass spectrometric studies yield values 0.03 to 0.05 units higher than the accepted one. |
