Summary:Hollow spheres of vanadium pentoxide made up of self assembled nanorods were prepared by the solvothermal method. The calcined samples of V2O5 nanorods had an orthorhombic structure which self-assembled into hollow sphere-like structures. The diameter of the hollow spheres was around 2-3 micron, while the nanorods forming the microspheres had diameters in the range 100-200 nm and were a few hundreds of nanometres in length. The change in the resistance of the V2O5 nanorod sensing element with respect to the test gas concentration was measured by noting the resistance at each concentration for various time intervals. The sensitivity of the material increased linearly with different concentrations of ethanol and ammonia. The V2O5 nanorods were more sensitive to ethanol than to ammonia.
