Summary:•Preparation of nanobiocomposite containing montmorillonite and alginate.•Adsorption of a textile dye using the synthesized nanobiocomposite.•Study of operational conditions effects on the dye removal efficiency.•Optimization of the adsorption process by central composite design. In the present work, adsorption of basic red 46 (BR46) by nano-sized montmorillonite (MMT)/calcium alginate (CA) composite was optimized using central composite design. The maximum dye removal of 85.07% was obtained at an initial dye concentration of 30mgL−1, adsorbent dosage of 2gL−1, contact time of 60min and temperature of 25°C. The adsorption capacity decreased with decreasing both initial pH and mixing speed. The pseudo-second order kinetic model had the highest correlation coefficient (R2=1.00). Based on the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity of MMT/CA was about 35mgg−1.
