Summary: | The ambipolar electric field in a tokamak with a magnetic field ripple, in the superbanana regime of collision frequency, is studied dynamically. Gauss's law, charge conservation, and a known formula from neoclassical theory reveal the relaxation of the radial electric field to its ambipolar value, with a time constant that is nearly independent of the magnetic field. The relaxation rate is close to the frequency of various drift instabilities. |
