description •Technetium is a major fission product in the nuclear industry.•Technetium exhibits nine oxidation states and extensive redox chemistry.•The thermodynamics, speciation, and redox chemistry of technetium are reviewed. The review summarizes and discusses the fundamental and scientific advances on the electrochemistry of Tc over the past 3 decades. The review focuses on thermodynamics, speciation data and redox chemistry of Tc species in oxidation state + VII to + III in aqueous media and of low valent and polynuclear species in organic media. The electrochemical behavior of Tc metal and alloys is reviewed and potential electrochemical applications discussed. The review is dedicated to the memory of Alexander Glebovich Maslennikov, a technetium scientist of IPCE RAS.
