Summary:The peat-fueled, 100-MW Lough Ree Power Station in the midlands of Ireland marks the beginning of a new era of electricity generation by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). Thirty percent more efficient than the old peat-fired power plant it replaced, LRP uses a circulating fluidized bed boiler from Foster Wheeler to meet very strict air-emissions standards while exploiting an indigenous energy source. Because of this, Lough Ree is named one of POWER's Top 12 Power Plants of 2005. The environmental performance of Lough Ree was a major factor in the decision to use a CFB boiler. Air-pollution standards are ratcheting down everywhere - and even faster in Ireland, where all large point sources of emissions will soon be subject to the stringent caps of the new EU directives and the Kyoto Protocol. ESB's Ronan McCoy says the new plant will generate 30% more electricity for the same amount of peat used than the plant it replaced.
