Summary: | We discuss the use of the semiclassical approximation of Alder and Winther in the description of fusion and breakup reactions with weakly bound nuclei. A comparison with realistic CDCC calculations shows that the method leads to accurate predictions for the breakup cross section. We show how the method can be extended to fusion reactions and apply it to a schematic two-channel model, in which the breakup states are approximated by a single effective channel. The complete fusion cross section so evaluated compares very well with predictions of fully quantum mechanical coupled-channels calculations. |
