Description
Summary:Effect of pre-annealing on stress and birefringence behavior of poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) films during stretching and relaxation processes was investigated. Amorphous and non-oriented PEN films were pre-annealed under the conditions of different temperatures and periods. The pre-annealed films were stretched uniaxially or equi-biaxially and then relaxed at fixed length. It was found that pre-annealing did not cause any notable change for the initial behavior of refractive indices variation, whereas the behaviors after necking were significantly affected. Through the comparison between in-plane and out-of-plane birefringence and the analysis of wide-angle x-ray diffraction patterns of drawn films of both stretching modes, it was confirmed that the orientation of naphthalene ring in the film plane was enhanced by pre-annealing.
