Summary: | Phagocytic activity, evaluated by the intravascular removal rate of colloidal carbon, was determined in mice injected with the reticuloendothelial (RE) stimulating agent, trypsinized zymosan, either prior to or immediately after exposure to 1000 r. Half-times (t/2), global phagocytic activity, corrected phagocytic activity, and weight changes of liver and spleen were determined at frequent postirradiation intervals. The hyperphagocytic state induced by the injection of zymosan was unaltered after radiation exposure. Phagocytic function was significantly impaired in normal mice 96 hours after exposure. In contrast, the injection of zymosan after exposure maintained normal RE function but did not induce a hyperfunctional state. Survival to various doses of x irradiation was unaltered by zymosaninduced RE stimulation. |
