Summary: | The total condensate of smoke from smoldering combustion of wood was analyzed. The phenol and furan components in aqueous condensate were extracted into methylene chloride and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The same homologues of guaiacol and syringol derived from lignin were detected as reported in earlier studies, and a series of furan derivatives was identified. These are believed to originate from pyrolysis of polysaccharides. Acetic acid was the dominant volatile acid present, but no significant concentrations of formic acid were documented. |
