Summary: | Though there have been numerous theoretical studies of the effects of elastic stress on the phase equilibria in coherent systems, there has been little experimental verification. This present study evaulated this effect in the neighborhood of the NiV- > Ni3V congruent point, which is at 25 at.% V and 1045 deg C. Melt spun ribbon made from slices of an arc melted button of the alloy were vacuum solution treated at 1150 deg C for 4 h and water quenched. Pieces of the ribbon were then given various aging treatments in argon. Microstructures were examined by both TEM and SEM. The data showed that elastic stress depressed the coherent solvus 6 deg C below the incoherent solvus at 21.5 at.% V and that the temperature difference decreases as the temperature decreases. Also, although there was good qualitative agreement with theory, the quantitative agreement was not as good. This may have been related to the simple model used to describe the effect. |
