Summary: | We have reexamined the evidence for a radial gradient in the distribution of CN strengths among 47 Tue giants (Norris and Freeman 1979). We find apparent differences between the distribution of cyanogen strengths determined from stellar spectra and the distribution determined from photoelectric photometry for stars in the same (outer) region of the cluster. This, together with the expected random variations in the observed distributions for a small number (~ 30) of stars, leads us to conclude that the available evidence for a CN gradient in 47 Tue is suggestive but not compelling. A more uniform set of observations for a larger sample of stars would obviously settle the issue. |
