Photometry of the Crab Nebula : variability and the mass of emitting gas
The luminosity of the Crab Nebula in H-beta He I 5876, and the synchrotron continuum was measured. The data suggest that the continuum has remained constant within measurement errors over the last 30 yr. Lower limits for the mass of line emitting gas have been estimated using a method that takes int...

Summary: | The luminosity of the Crab Nebula in H-beta He I 5876, and the synchrotron continuum was measured. The data suggest that the continuum has remained constant within measurement errors over the last 30 yr. Lower limits for the mass of line emitting gas have been estimated using a method that takes into account spatial variations in the line intensities across the nebula. Depending upon assumptions involving electron densities and helium abundances, the calculated mass ranges between 1 and 2 solar mass range. (Author) |
