Description
Summary:This article reviews the current situation in the field of rare [ital K] decays: the relevant phenomenology, the present experimental situation, and prospects for the near future. Study of rare [ital K] decays can make a significant contribution in a number of different frontier areas of research in high-energy physics. In the area of [ital CP] violation, study of such rare decays as [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup 0][ital e+][ital e[minus]], [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup 0][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]], [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][pi][sup 0][nu][bar [nu]], and muon polarization in [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][mu][sup +][mu][sup [minus]] can provide important complementary information to what has been learned from the decay [ital K][sub [ital L]][sup 0][r arrow][pi][pi]. Even though experiments with sufficient accuracy to make a meaningful study of [ital CP] violation are still a few years away, significant progress has been made in this general area during the last decade.
