Summary: | A novel hot forging process for the breakdown of high-temperature intermetallic alloys is developed and demnonstrated for a single- phase titanium aluminide, Ti--51Al--2Mn. In the process proposed here, the ram speed is increased substantially during the forging stroke as the material crystallizes to a finer-grained structure and its hot workability increases. As a result, fracture is avoided, the grain size is reduced, and the processing time is decreased, resulting in improved material quality and lower costs. |
