Two-photon spectroscopy of MgO:Ni sup 2

We report polarized two-photon excitation spectra of the {sup 3}{ital A}{sub 2}{r arrow}{sup 3}{ital T}{sub 2}, {sup 1}{ital E}, and {sup 3}T{sub 1} transitions of Ni{sup 2+}-doped MgO measured by detecting the {sup 3}{ital T}{sub 2}{r arrow}{sup 3}{ital A}{sub 2} infrared luminescence with a Ge pho...

Description
Summary:We report polarized two-photon excitation spectra of the {sup 3}{ital A}{sub 2}{r arrow}{sup 3}{ital T}{sub 2}, {sup 1}{ital E}, and {sup 3}T{sub 1} transitions of Ni{sup 2+}-doped MgO measured by detecting the {sup 3}{ital T}{sub 2}{r arrow}{sup 3}{ital A}{sub 2} infrared luminescence with a Ge photodiode. Two-photon excitation spectra of the {sup 3}{ital A}{sub 2}{r arrow}{sup 1}{ital T}{sub 2} and {ital b} {sup 3}{ital T}{sub 1} transitions were measured by monitoring the visible emission from the {sup 1}{ital T}{sub 2} state. Hidden zero-phonon lines have been revealed as well as even-parity vibrational features. Additionally, the assignments of the well-known one-photon, odd-parity vibronic spectra have been confirmed by comparison with the two-photon spectra. The two-photon polarization ratios were measured for the {sup 3}{ital T}{sub 2}({ital E}) and {sup 3}{ital T}{sub 2}({ital T}{sub 1}) zero-phonon lines and an intensity calculation using only the {ital d} electrons was performed. The failure of this calculation demonstrated that the ligands significantly contribute to the overall two-photon intensity.
