Summary: | Data from epidemiologic studies on the health effects of cadmium carried out in Belgium are reported and discussed. Overall results have shown that Cd accumulation in the human body has increased significantly in polluted areas. Three main groups of thresholds have been identified. The epidemiologic data suggest that, for the general population, the amount of Cd accumulatd in the body should preferentially not exceed a level corresponding to a urinary excretion of 2 mu g Cd/24 h. To prevent the concentration of Cd in the renal cortex from reaching 50 ppm at age 50, a daily intake of Cd in nonsmokers should not exceed 1 mu g Cd/kg body weight. |
