Description
Summary:Airborne particulates collected during a 1-yr period in Pisa, Italy, were evaluated for genotoxic potential. Mutagenic activity, as indicated by Salmonella assays, was highest during winter for samples from a street with heavy vehicular traffic; the abundance of airborne particulates was also highest during this season. Samples from a site with less intense traffic showed a peak in mutagenicity in January and February in the presence of metabolic activation. Similar results were recorded for samples from an area of limited traffic.
