Concentrations and metabolism of PCBs in eggs of waterbirds on the German North Sea coast
Eggs from 11 bird species breeding along the polluted German Wadden sea coast were analysed without shells for PCBs. The degree of PCB metabolism was taken as the difference between the mean weighted degree of chlorination of the environmental samples and that of a standard PCB mixture. Total PCB eg...

Summary: | Eggs from 11 bird species breeding along the polluted German Wadden sea coast were analysed without shells for PCBs. The degree of PCB metabolism was taken as the difference between the mean weighted degree of chlorination of the environmental samples and that of a standard PCB mixture. Total PCB egg concentrations varied from 0.93 to 5.14 mg per kg; there was no obvious relationship between total PCB level and degree of metabolism. It was not clear whether stored PCBs or the metabolic products of PCBs were most toxic. Species with a high degree of metabolism feeding on gill-breathing animals were more likely to be influenced by PCBs than animals with comparable feeding behaviour and lower metabolism. |
