Summary: | Excitation energies of various electronic configurations in rare earth and 3d transition metal compounds are considered and related to the peculiarities of the observed electrical and optical properties. Intraionic excitations of 4f, 3d electrons to less localized nl states are shown to be equally important as interionic d-d or charge transfer transitions usually considered, and to be even more significant in compounds containing low valence metals. |
