Summary: | Alloy K-500 (64Ni--35Cu) is a gamma '-hardened alloy that has been in use for more than 70 years without much information on the effect of grain size on strength and ductility. This study determined that the yield stress is controlled by gamma '-particle dispersion. Grain boundaries are very weak barriers to dislocation movement, making an insignificant contribution to alloy strengthening. The ductility decreases with increasing grain size due to increased intergranular cracking. |
