Sublethal effects of phenanthrene, nicotine, and pinane on Daphnia pulex

Summary: | D. pulex were exposed to various concentrations of phenanthrene, (0-0.3 mg per litre), nicotine (0-0.24 mg per litre) and pinane (0-0.50 mg per litre. Fecundity and growth decreased as the concentration increased in all 3 substances. At 0.13 mg per litre phenanthrene mortality was 53 per cent and fecundity approached zero. With nicotine at the highest concentration (0.24), fecundity approached zero and mortality was 66 per cent. With pinane, no neonates were observed at 0.50 mg per litre and mortality was complete. The lowest observable effect concentrations for growth and fecundity with each chemical tested were 3-30 per cent of the 48 h EC50s. |
