Summary: | Lindane, an organochlorine pesticide, has been widely used as an agricultural pesticide. It has been detected in human milk and fat samples in India and many other developing countries. Accumulation of lindane in maternal tissues stores may lead to exposure to the fetus during gestation. The placental transfer of lindane was studied in albino wistar rats. Two dose levels of lindane were administered at both middle and late gestation. Lindane was detected in blood at all gestational days, and at all dose levels the accumulation of lindane was dose dependent. There was a dose-related deposition of lindane in the liver and thymus at both stages of gestation. The concentration of lindane in the lung was generally low and deposition dose dependent. There was proportionately more lindane in the fat of the rats in late gestation than to those in mid-gestation. Lindane was also found in all the fetuses during gestation. The lindane concentration in the fetus is related to dose level, total amount received, and stage of gestation. |
