Description
Summary:One of the well‐documented characteristics of the wall turbulent flows is the formation of low‐velocity regions at the wall that are accelerated by the surrounding fluid. In this work, a low‐velocity region was artificially created close to the wall, and its evolution in time was followed using hot‐wire techniques. The acceleration and consequently the force on this region were calculated. An investigation of some of the possible force mechanisms that can act on the flow revealed that the dominant one is related to an ‘‘added mass’’ effect. It is possible that similar forces act on the low‐velocity regions that exist in a natural turbulent flow.
