Summary: | This paper presents a mathematical analysis and computer simulation experiments to determine the effect of amplitude modulation (AM) on a fractal model of electromagnetic noise. The experiments found that the desired fractal character of a baseband monofractal noise signal was altered and became a multifractal signal over its upper sideband spectral frequencies, yet approximately monofractal when considering a small frequency range within this sideband. However, the magnitude of the spectral exponent of the power law that describes the modulated signal in this small frequency range differed significantly from that of the modulating signal. Therefore, due to first, the character-altering behavior, second, the nonspecificity of the spectral exponent, and third, the limited narrowband range for observing monofractality, this paper concluded that AM was not considered ideal for synthesizing a broadband signal from a baseband model. |
