Summary: | A model is developed for the thermodynamic properties of chromian spinels of petrological interest. The model is internally consistent with the thermodynamic data of Berman. A geothermometer based on exchange of Fe and Mg between olivine and spinel is developed which may be applied with confidence to assemblages formed at low P and at T 400-1400 degrees C. Phase relations within the spinel prism [(Fe,Mg)(Al,Cr,Fe3+)2O4] are calculated for T over the range 500-600 degrees C and compare favourably with petrological observations. |
