Summary: | The morphology of some deep-sea Turridae lacking radulae was studied. The main features of their digestive system are the absence of a radula sac, venom and salivary glands and the reduction or absence of a proboscis. A new genus Teretiopsis including 3 new species and T. thaumastopsis (Dautzenberg and Fischer, 1896) is described. On the basis of differences of the digestive system when compared with other turrids lacking radulae the monotypical subfamily Taraninae Casey, 1904 new status (type genus Taranis Jeffreys, 1870) is considered. It is shown that the process of radula reduction has occurred independently in different phylogenetic lines of Toxoglossa—the subfamilies Daphnellinae and Taraninae among Turridae and the family Terebridae. |
