Summary: | We describe a transducer suitable for dynamic displacement measurements. The transducer uses a commercially available Hall effect sensor and a permanent magnet. Displacements are obtained by measuring the variation in magnetic field strength along the permanent magnet with the Hall effect sensor. To illustrate the capabilities of the transducer, we discuss three application examples. The first example demonstrates the good performance of the transducer under impact loading conditions and for velocities of up to 10 m/s. The other two examples illustrate the usefulness of the transducer for dynamic fracture experiments. |
