Summary: | A 9-month pilot-scale study examining the efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection of secondary municipal wastewater was conducted at the Hyrum Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, Hyrum, Utah. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tube and quartz-sleeve reactors were evaluated in the study. The influence of photoreactivation on disinfection and the relationship between commonly measured water quality parameters and disinfection efficiency were examined. The two reactor designs effectively disinfected the effluent over a wide range of water quality. Photoreactivations were periodically observed for the total and fecal coliform groups of as much as 2.0 log and 1.5 log, respectively. There was little evidence of photoreactivation of the fecal streptococcus group. Water quality parameters including suspended solids, turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand, and total organic carbon significantly correlated to bacterial survival and UV absorbance of the wastewater. |
