Summary: | Increasing demand for domestic, agricultural and industrial water raises the possibility of international conflicts over freshwater supplies. Recognition of this danger underscores the importance of EMINWA, founded in 1986. The author outlines present and projected water supplies worldwide before describing the main features of EMINWA's work programme: to assist governments to manage shared freshwater resources, to publish a manual and guidelines, to use projects for demonstration purposes, to train experts, and to publicize the programme's activities. The first fruit of this labour has been the Zambezi Action Plan. |
