Summary: | Water Factory 21 (WF21) is an advanced wastewater treatment facility designed to produce $0.66\ {\rm m}^{3}/{\rm s}$ (15 mgd) potable quality water for groundwater recharge and protection against seawater intrusion. The treatment processes include lime clarification, air stripping, recarbonation, prechlorination, mixed media filtration, granular activated carbon adsorption, final chlorination, and reverse osmosis (RO) demineralization. To reduce costs, pretreatment requirements before demineralization have been reduced. Results have shown that lime clarification before RO treatment effectively removes a wide range of contaminants, including trace organics. The data show that the lime/RO process can produce a similar effluent quality to that from the full WF21 system, at lower cost. |
