Description
Summary:Chlorination of two papermill effluents neither improved nor degraded water quality in the receiving stream. Disinfection was generally ineffective because of the large bacterial population and high chlorine demand of the effluent. Klebsiella and E. coli were reduced and virtually no chlorinated hydrocarbons were formed that caused taste and odor problems at the downstream water filtration plant. The average carry-over of total residual chlorine to the receiving stream was 22 ppb. Stream ecology (species diversity and equitability of benthic macroinvertebrates) was not impacted.
