Summary: | The prevalence of the K antigen in northeastern Iran is similar to that observed that in European populations14 but the prevalence in southwestern Iran is significantly higher.15 The high prevalence of the K gene in southwestern Iran likely occurs because of the presence of Iranian Arabs in this geographic region, who have been reported to have the highest frequency of the K gene among all indigenous populations of Iran.16 In fact, the highest known frequency of the K blood group gene anywhere (ie, 18%) occurs in an isolated desert Arab population.17 Based on these considerations, we encourage authors who report observations of blood group antibodies in populations that have undergone transfusion to take into account the genetic affinity or differences between blood donors and their recipients. |
